About Belmont Abbey
Belmont Abbey is a Roman Catholic church in Hereford, Herefordshire. It is part of the Archdiocese of Cardiff-Menevia.
Introduction
Belmont Abbey in Hereford is a Gothic Revival church designed by Edward Welby Pugin and completed by his brother Peter Paul Pugin, built between 1854 and 1886.
History
The abbey church served as the cathedral for the diocese of Newport and Menevia between 1859 and 1916. The foundation stone for the abbey church was laid on 15 February 1854. The church was consecrated in September 1860. In 1978 the building was returned to its former plan with a central altar placed beneath the crossing tower. The church is built of sandstone with dressings of Forest of Dean stone and a tiled roof. The reredos was installed in 1866 and the roof was raised in 1869. The chapel of St Benedict was added on the south side in 1862 and lengthened in 1869. The porch on the south side of the nave was moved to the north flank in 1863. Extensions to the north transept in 1882 allowed the creation of the St David chapel. The nine bells were installed in 1884 and the choir stalls and organ with a case designed by PP Pugin were fitted in 1889.
