About Blessed John Duns Scotus

Blessed John Duns Scotus is a Roman Catholic church in Gorbals, Glasgow City. It is part of the Archdiocese of Glasgow.

Introduction

Blessed John Duns Scotus in Gorbals, within the Archdiocese of Glasgow, is entrusted to the Friars Minor, followers of St Francis of Assisi.

History

The parish was established by merging older parishes that had served the Gorbals for over a century. The merged parishes were St Francis, St John's, St Luke's, St Bonaventures, and Our Lady & St Margarets in Tradeston.

Parish life

The church building, formerly St Luke's, was constructed and opened in 1975, as shown in a film. Hosted groups in the hall include Parish Bingo, Saint Francis Pipe Band, The Gorbalites, Giggle N Grow, and sparcs Children's clubs. The Greyfriars centre was created through redevelopment of the old St Luke's Church and parish hall.

Visiting

The church is wheelchair accessible and has a Loop system for those with hearing aids. The hall is wheelchair accessible, has a wheelchair accessible toilet and baby changing areas. The hall is a large hall accommodating 200 situated behind the old Saint Francis Church, with a small hall attached for 60 people and a well-equipped kitchen.

The reception is situated in the large open Atrium and controls the entrance to the Church and to the Greyfriars Centre. The hall was built with funds raised by the parishioners and has served the parish and community over many decades.

The relics of St Valentine were transferred to Blessed John Duns Scotus in 1993 and enshrined in the new Greyfriars centre on St Valentine's day, Sunday 14th February 1999. There is a shop with a wide range of religious artefacts and mass cards available for purchase before and after most masses.
