About Cathedral Church of St. Anne

Cathedral Church of St. Anne is a Roman Catholic church in Leeds, West Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Leeds.

Introduction

The Cathedral Church of Saint Anne in Leeds was built in 1902-04 by architects JH Eastwood and SK Greenslade, incorporating C19 remains. The cathedral is designed in the Arts and Crafts Gothic Revival style. The cathedral was re-ordered in 1960 by the firm Wakeman and Bullen.

Architecture and furnishings

The reredos in the south chancel chapel was designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin and completed by 1842. The pulpit was made by JF Bentley in 1897. The cathedral is built of Ketton stone ashlar and coursed Horsforth sandstone with slate roofs. The west elevation has a porch with 7 steps, low double gates with cross and scroll motifs, paired panelled doors under an arch, and a large stone Crucifix with flanking figures fronting a west window of 3, 6, 3 lights.

The north facade has a 2-stage tower with plinth, narrow windows and niches, 2-light louvred belfry windows, clasping square buttresses, and a pyramid roof. The interior has an elaborate font on the north side, side chapels with statues and altars, and a high chancel with organ on the north side. The nave piers have roll mouldings, and there are ornate niches high on plain walls, the three flanking the chancel arch having statues. The east end has a mosaic with figures rising to a small east window above a fine carved and painted reredos. JH Eastwood was a founder member of the Guild of St Gregory and St Luke devoted to the improvement of church craftsmanship.
