About Christ Church
Christ Church is a Roman Catholic church in Cheadle, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Diocese of Shrewsbury.
History
Christ Church Parish began with Father Frank McGowan’s appointment in 1959, after Catholics had met for monthly Mass at the Heald Green Hotel from 1947. The foundation stone was laid in July 1961, the inaugural Mass was celebrated on 8 December 1962, and Bishop Grasser formally opened and blessed the church in January 1963.
The building
The interior was conceived as a strong, simple composition in wood and stone, with work in stainless steel and fibreglass. Its furnishings include a tabernacle, monstrance, altars, carved pews and altar furniture, and stained-glass Stations of the Cross.
