About Christ the King, Reading

Christ the King, Reading is a Roman Catholic church in Reading, Berkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Portsmouth.

Introduction

Christ the King in Reading, within the Diocese of Portsmouth, was opened and consecrated on 6th December 1959.

History

The permanent church was built by an all professional team of builders. The church was consecrated on 6th December 1959 with the Abbot of Douai officiating. Great care was taken over choosing the furnishings, statues, crib figures and Stations of the Cross.

Music and liturgy

The Catholic prisoners of war formed a choir to sing the Mass as it had never been sung before in this area. At the Christmas Mass 1946, the German choir's singing of 'Stille Nachte' in harmony so enthralled the congregation that the carol was repeated several times.

Parish life

The parish runs a Bereavement Support Group. The parish has a Pastoral Parish Council, Flower Arrangement, Cleaners & maintenance, Hall & Social, and a 60's Plus Club. The Parish Council works closely with the parish priest in sharing pastoral responsibility and has a social committee.

The Polish community is growing in the Whitley community. The parish runs a confirmation programme every two years for those in Year 8 or secondary school. Couples wishing to marry at the church undergo preparation including discussions with the parish priest and a marriage preparation course, supported by a married couple from the parish.
