Church of the Sacred Heart, Morriston

Introduction

The new sanctuary consists of 5 arches with myriad coloured windows. The sacristy area has been extended to allow more adequate storage for vestments, candles, books and altar linen.

Music and liturgy

The concrete font was removed in 1988 and can now be seen in the front garden of the presbytery. The present pulpit was the location of the choir in the original layout. In December 2001 the altar rail was removed, in line with the teaching that there should be no separation between priest and people. The early 1980s saw the acquisition by the parish of the old Soar Chapel and vestry on School Road.

The Sacred Heart Parish choir practice is held every week in the gallery using the organ. Parish organ lessons are given at the Centre or Church organs, with around 20 young people learning.

Parish life

The parish has an Over 50s Club, Friends of the Santo Nino, a 1st Sat Fatima Prayer Group, and a Divine Mercy Diary Study Group. The parish was administered alongside Clydach and Ystradgynlais until 1922. The first resident priest, Fr J. Nowell, served until 1940 and saw the presbytery built in School Road.

Catechists are provided for First Confession and First Holy Communion. The Lady Chapel is a simple room for quiet prayer.
