About Holy Trinity, South Woodham Ferrers
Holy Trinity, South Woodham Ferrers is a Roman Catholic church in South Woodham Ferrers, Essex. It is part of the Diocese of Brentwood.
Introduction
Holy Trinity in South Woodham Ferrers is jointly owned and shared by the Church of England, Catholic and Methodist denominations. In 1982 a new church opened in South Woodham Ferrers as a Local Ecumenical Project with paired Primary Schools (St Joseph's RC and Trinity St Mary's Anglican).
History
Fr Clay died in May 1970 at age 80, after 9 years of stewardship. The church is covered by a tent-shaped roof of dark grey tiles and has no spires or steeples, only one modest bell. A plain wooden cross, 15 feet high, stands outside the church on a raised concrete platform.
In 1954 Miss Mary Brown bought the bungalow 'Haddon' in Maldon Road, made a room available for regular Sunday Mass, and gave part of her gardens to the Diocese for a permanent church. In 1999 major work began to repair, upgrade, and redecorate the original building, including a new heating system and windows, a new sacristy layout, confessional facilities, and a new entrance porch, completed in 2003.
Regular events
The RCIA group meetings run from mid-September to the end of May, featuring faith sharing, scripture reading, prayer and discussion. Church members support the Children's Society by collecting money in home boxes, gathered annually from September to January.
Visiting
A Joint Church Guide Book offers a guided tour of some of the main features in the church. The church has full facilities for the disabled and a loop system for hearing aid users.
