About Mary Immaculate and St Peter, New Barnet

Mary Immaculate and St Peter, New Barnet is a Roman Catholic church in New Barnet, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.

Introduction

T. H. B. Scott, F.R.I.B.A., designed the church in the Romanesque style, seating three hundred and costing just over £5,000.

History

Statues of St Anthony and St Joseph were acquired in 1915, and the statue of St Theresa was acquired ten years later. The church was built in 1938, as stated in the consecration account.

Parish life

The parish has embraced the Live Simply initiative inspired by the encyclical Laudato Si'. A group of ladies meets at Our Lady's Chapel to recite the Rosary.

Catechists work in teams to prepare children for the sacraments. The parish runs an RCIA programme for adults wishing to find out more about the Catholic faith and for those wanting to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion.

The parish arranges for housebound parishioners to be visited and taken Holy Communion, and where appropriate to receive the Sacrament of the Sick. The First Holy Communion course includes extra sessions for children attending non-Catholic schools.

Sacraments and pastoral care

A Confirmation programme for teenagers is offered, usually for those aged 14 in year 9. Extraordinary ministers of holy communion take Holy Communion to the sick on a regular basis.
