Our Lady and Saint Joseph, Osgodby

Introduction

Our Lady and Saint Joseph in Osgodby, within the Diocese of Nottingham, is a Roman Catholic chapel and former priests house dating from 1793, with alterations and additions of circa 1850.

Architecture and furnishings

The chapel was formerly listed as Saint Joseph's R.C. Chapel and subsequently amended to Osgodby Penal Days Mass House. The interior has a C19 marble altar table and reredos surrounded by an altar rail. Two windows contain stained glass of 1890 which has been brought from elsewhere. The chapel is built of red brick with a pantile roof, stone coped gables and kneelers, and brick end and ridge stacks.

The chapel facade is two storeys high with dentillated eaves and five bays. The chapel entrance door is half-glazed and panelled, covered by a small timber porch with a gable topped by a cross. The first floor has five semi-circular headed openings, with a blank at the left, three central windows with five panes, and a right-hand window with glazing bars. The staircase to the first-floor chapel has fine thin turned balusters matched by the gallery balustrade at the rear of the chapel.

The gallery has a triple arched opening, the central one fully open and the outer two balustraded, with a pair of reeded Doric columns supporting a low semi-circular arch flanked by wider taller arches terminating on reeded pilasters. The pews are late C19 and plain, and there are also C19 statue pillars and statues.

The church is part of the Holy Rood, Market Rasen with Saint Thomas More, Caistor, Saint Francis de Sales, Hainton and Our Lady and Saint Joseph, Osgodby parish grouping.
