Our Lady and St Cuthbert, Prudhoe

Introduction

The church was first erected at Prudhoe Hall and then moved to its current location in 1904.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is constructed of ashlar stone and has a Lakeland slate roof. Its plan includes a nave, chancel, north transept, south vestries, south porch, and a south-west turret. The five-bay nave features two-light windows with mixed Perpendicular and Flamboyant tracery. The west end is a polygonal apse with shafted two-light windows containing Geometric tracery.

The gabled nave roof has steeply ridged coping and ridge tiles shaped as intersecting round arches. An octagonal bell turret with cusped openings, gargoyles, and a spirelet crowns the church. Carved tabernacles beneath the west window hold figures of Christ and the Virgin and Child. The church displays fine carving on the capitals of window shafts, three niches with shields and foliage in the transept west wall, and many ornamental gargoyles.

The interior includes a finely painted chancel roof. Similar tracery appears on the glazed sides of the porch and on the large four-light nave east window.
