Our Lady and St. Paulinus

Introduction

Edward Welby Pugin designed this Gothic Revival church, which was built in 1871. The parish has a 200 Club with a yearly draw for £200.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is a tall slender building on a steeply sloping site, with a 9-bay nave and a 3-bay chancel. At the rear of the church is a gallery, beneath which stands an elegant carved oak screen. The nave contains 14 stations of the cross. The church is constructed of pitched-faced stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof.

Slender buttresses mark the bays of the church. The nave and apse feature paired lancets with cusped heads and a six-foil over. The chancel has single lancets with simple tracery. On the very tall south side, a lean-to aisle with lancets adjoins, and lancets appear in the clerestorey.

To the left, a small projecting baptistry bay contains an eight-foiled rose window. Inside, the south arcade has six bays with very large square bases to the columns. The chancel arch rests on small colonnette responds at high level, with heavily foliated capital and corbel. In the baptistry stands a well-carved plaster Madonna and Christ.

The parish runs a 'New to You' Shop. The parish has a Flea Market that is always looking for new things to sell.
