Our Lady of Lourdes and St Gregory the Great, Farnworth is a Roman Catholic church in Farnworth, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Diocese of Salford.
Introduction
Our Lady of Lourdes and St Gregory the Great in Farnworth, in the Diocese of Salford, traces its origins to the mission of St Gregory's, founded in 1852 by Bishop William Turner for the Catholics of Halshaw Moor. The present parish was formed in 2004 when the church of St Gregory's closed and its parish merged with that of Our Lady of Lourdes, Farnworth.
History
In 1931 Bishop Henshaw came personally to inspect the locality and decided that it should become a separate Parish. On July 22nd 1931 the Reverend Father Thomas Butler was appointed the first Parish Priest of Our Lady of Lourdes. On September 6th 1931 the first sod was cut by Father Butler, work commenced on September 7th using voluntary labour, and on September 27th 1931 High Mass was celebrated for the first time.
Visiting
The parish hosts a local branch of HOOT Credit Union. The Diocese of Salford has travelled to the Shrine of Lourdes each year as an organised pilgrimage since the 1920s.
