About Our Lady of Lourdes & St Vincent de Paul, Harrow Road
Our Lady of Lourdes & St Vincent de Paul, Harrow Road is a Roman Catholic church in Maida Hill, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.
History
The parish was founded in 1876, and on the site was built St Vincent's Home for orphaned children. The foundation stone for the original church was laid on 24th March 1879. This was the first church to be dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes in England, and with the adjacent St Vincent's Home, it had the double title of Our Lady of Lourdes & St Vincent de Paul. At the laying of the foundation stone on 24th March 1879, two paralysed children were present, and the next day they were both instantaneously cured. The original church was knocked down and rebuilt in brutalist style architecture in 1973 and consecrated in 1976. The Marian statue of the church, before which the Novena was made, was given away when the church was rebuilt in 1973 and never returned.
Architecture and furnishings
In 2020/2021 the breeze block finish of the church was rendered and the courtyard refurbished with the installation of a grotto and garden, and a mosaic of St Vincent de Paul installed on the outside wall.
