About Our Lady of Perpetual Succour

Our Lady of Perpetual Succour is a Roman Catholic church in Chapeltown, Moray. It is part of the Diocese of Aberdeen.

Introduction

The former church was probably designed in 1828 by Rev Walter Lovi, who served as Priest at Keith from 1825 to 1837 and also designed churches at Dufftown, Keith, and Braemar.

History

The altar's five-panelled front depicts an angel with a musical instrument on each panel. A drawing of the former church, dated 1840, hangs in the sacristy.

Architecture and furnishings

The rectangular church is fronted at the south by a three-stage square gabled tower with an entrance in the centre of the north face. The church is harled with pink tooled granite dressings. The interior has a richly stencilled lofty aisles interior, with stencilled decoration continuing to the panelled gallery front across the north end of the church. The high chancel has plain walls and a richly decorated timber barrel vaulted ceiling.

The church has simple pine pews and a facetted pulpit decorated with vines on ashlar. A canopied niche above the doorway houses a statue of Our Lady. Narrow hoodmoulded, round-headed lights with leaded glazing illuminate the nave elevations. The chancel's east elevation features a round-headed tripartite window under a continuous hoodmould, with a diminutive arcaded eaves band above.
