About Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Churchdown

Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, Churchdown is a Roman Catholic church in Churchdown, Gloucestershire. It is part of the Diocese of Clifton.

Introduction

The current church was completed on 3 May 1992, with over 500 attending the three Masses that day.

History

In early 1942 the congregation moved to the skittle alley at the Hare and Hounds pub. In August 1944 the congregation moved to Sandycroft Social Club. The first Mass in the converted church was on 19 December 1954, with 192 present. On 16 June 1991, the last Masses were celebrated in the 'barn church'. Our Lady's SVP group is a small group of volunteers who help others in the local Churchdown community and surrounding area.

Architecture and furnishings

A Christ the King icon above the altar was painted by a sister especially for Our Lady's church. The icon is unusual in that Christ is seated in a mandorla of three blues, usually reserved for the Ascension. The icon's alternative choice at Churchdown was due to the brick wall and darkness of the sanctuary, needing a strong focus; gold 'assiste' highlighting was used on the garments. The letters in the halo of the icon mean 'The Being' in Greek, indicating the person represented is the same who revealed himself to Moses at the burning bush.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The parish encourages the faithful to contact the parish priest to receive the Sacrament of the Sick, especially before a hospital procedure. Young persons seeking confirmation must be a baptised Catholic in Year 9 or above. Adults who are baptised Catholic and not yet confirmed should contact the parish priest to receive the sacrament.
