Our Lady of the Assumption and St Edward the Confessor, Lyndhurst

Introduction

Our Lady of the Assumption and St Edward the Confessor in Lyndhurst was built in 1896 by Sir Arthur Blomfield for M Edouard Souberbielle.

Architecture and furnishings

The church is built of squared rough-faced Purbeck stone with Chilmark dressings and a plain tile roof. The church has a plan of nave and chancel in one, with an east separate Lady Chapel to the endower's wife, a north-west porch and tower, and a west lean-to to the nave, in Decorated style. The reredos has a fresco by Paul Natter. The church features a gabled low east projection with a pointed east door and wrought-iron gates, topped by a pointed 3-light east window.

Buttresses divide the sides into bays, with the east bay having paired 2-light pointed windows with cinquefoils in their heads, and a western buttress carrying a statue beneath a canopy. On the west, a pointed arch containing 5 stepped lancets sits above a lean-to with lancets and a parapet, while walls at each end of the roof are supported by buttresses. Inside, the chancel has Purbeck shafts to the rear arches.
