About Our Lady of the Assumption
Our Lady of the Assumption is a Roman Catholic church in Blackpool, Lancashire. It is part of the Diocese of Lancaster.
Parish life
Catechists work in teams with young parishioners preparing for First Confession, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. A team of parishioners organises and runs fundraising and social events. An enthusiastic team of flower-arrangers enhances the beauty of the churches. Volunteer sacristans prepare the churches and assist the priest and servers for Mass.
Volunteers clean the churches and launder the church linen. Altar servers, who must have made their first holy communion, serve at Mass, and adults are encouraged to serve. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion serve in the parish. Readers serve at Mass in the parish. Volunteers help with food parcels for the poor.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Parents seeking a child's baptism should approach the Parish Priest at weekend Mass. Baptisms are held on Sunday after Mass and occasionally within the Mass itself.
Regular participation in the Parish Sunday Mass and commitment to the parish preparation programme is expected of the child or young person and their families for Confirmation. Couples wishing to marry must make an appointment with the Parish Priest at least 6 months before the wedding to allow for paperwork and marriage preparation. A person who is no longer alert or able to take communion may still be given the Anointing of the Sick as the Last Rites, and priests offer spiritual support to the family.
