About Our Lady of the Assumption, Deptford
Our Lady of the Assumption, Deptford is a Roman Catholic church in Deptford, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Southwark.
Introduction
Our Lady of the Assumption in Deptford, within the Archdiocese of Southwark, was founded in 1842 by Father William Marshall, its first pastor. The first chapel was set up in school buildings and served until 1844. In 1844 Canon Richard North designated a site for a permanent building.
Parish life
On October 4, 2025, the church hosted a celebration of a priest's 30th ordination anniversary, featuring processions, prayers, and hymns. The majority of the faithful come from African nations, with Indians, Vietnamese and Chinese also in the mix. The parish school, Saint Joseph, provides the avenue of engaging the children. The parish aims to build a closely knit community caring for the sick, elderly, lonely, vulnerable, aggrieved, lapsed young adults and single parents. The parish strives to be supportive of migrants' needs and their integration into the wider community.
