About Our Lady of the Assumption, Gateacre
Our Lady of the Assumption, Gateacre is a Roman Catholic church in Liverpool, Merseyside. It is part of the Archdiocese of Liverpool.
Introduction
The parish of Our Lady of the Assumption in Gateacre, Liverpool, began after the Second World War when a large pre-fabricated estate of some 1,200 dwellings was established in Gateacre and Childwall Valley. In 1947, Archbishop Richard Downey appointed a priest to establish the new parish. The first Mass took place on 4th May 1947 in the school in Gateacre Village, with permission from the vicar of the Anglican Church St Stephen's.
History
A new pre-fabricated Church of Our Lady of the Assumption was blessed and opened by Archbishop Downey on May 29th 1949, on Childwall Valley Road. With the continued growth of the area, the Parish was divided into three and two new parishes were created: Saint Cyril of Jerusalem in 1968 on the Naylorsfield Estate and Saint Gregory’s in 1970 on the Netherley Estate. In 1991 the parish was accepted by the Montfort Missionaries, who had a team ministry with St Cyril’s and (later) St Gregory’s. Our Lady’s, St Cyril’s and St Gregory’s parishes were dissolved in 2005 and the church became part of a larger parish of St John Almond with St Cyril, St Gregory and St Paschal Baylon.
Parish life
The parish has a children’s space at the back of church with toys for little ones to play with. The parish has two parish schools, and the children have daily times of prayer, with RE teaching classed as ‘outstanding’ and regular class and whole school Masses. The parish offers the sacrament of anointing on request, either at Mass or at home.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Adults seeking baptism are invited to take part in Alpha leading to the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Confirmations at Our Lady’s take place in Year 8, and adults or young people not yet confirmed may be received into the Church at the Easter Vigil. At Christmas and Holy Week, children spend time preparing for these celebrations in a very active way.
