About Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and St. Mun

Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception and St. Mun is a Roman Catholic church in Dunoon, Argyll and Bute. It is part of the Diocese of Argyll and the Isles.

Introduction

The new Diocese of Argyll and the Isles included Dunoon from the re-establishment of the Scottish hierarchy in 1878.

History

A significant growth in Catholic numbers between 1844 and 1862 was claimed to come directly from Irish incomers fleeing the Potato Famine. Worship took place in a house that the Church had purchased. Title deeds named, as the main trustee, the bishop in charge of the Western District of Scotland. Rev. John Black, appointed in 1869 as Dunoon's first resident priest, remained until 1882.

The old church, sold to the Education Authority, changed hands in 1929. On 3 May 1931 the present church was blessed and opened.

A statue and a candle stand were blessed on the Solemnity of the Assumption in 2020. The parish church is the normal place for baptism, on a day agreed after a meeting with the parish priest.

Visiting

Community, discipleship and faith sharing are the essence of CaFE groups. A group offers sewing, quilting, knitting, crochet, leather craft, card making and rug making.
