About Our Lady & St Oswald

Our Lady & St Oswald is a Roman Catholic church in Oswestry, Shropshire. It is part of the Diocese of Shrewsbury.

History

In 1864, a small building on Cripplegate was acquired and adapted for use as a church and school. In 1879, an iron church was brought from Barmouth and set up by Thomas Longueville. Bishop Edmund Knight consecrated the church on 10 June 1890. The side aisle and Lady Chapel were added in 1925 in memory of Dorothy Longueville.

Notable features

The carved oak reredos behind the high altar was formerly in Holy Trinity Church, Salop Road. The Italian-style altar in the Lady Chapel has panels of lapis lazuli and turquoise around a figure of the Virgin and Child. Three modern stained glass windows at the back depict the church's patrons and the baptism of Christ.
