About Sacred heart and our Lady

Sacred heart and our Lady is a Roman Catholic church in Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire. It is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

Introduction

The Catholic presence in Tenbury Wells under the name Sacred Heart and Our Lady dates back to 1936, when a six-week mission was held.

History

In 1939 Captain Avery and his wife bought a house beside diocesan land in Tenbury, and Mass was first celebrated in its stable-block chapel on 6 August 1939. For many years thereafter Tenbury was served by priests from Droitwich and other neighbouring centres. By the mid-1960s the house, chapel and grounds were bequeathed to the Archdiocese, as fundraising began for a more permanent church. The earlier chapel and house proved structurally unsound and were demolished in 1969. The present church building was constructed in 1973-74, designed by John Wheatley of Cleobury Mortimer, built by Caldicott & Sons of Tenbury Wells.
