Saint Alban, Chaddesden

Introduction

The celebrant of the Sunday Mass that began in 1943 at a health centre in Sussex Circus was Monsignor James Hargreaves, parish priest of Saint Mary's, Derby. War Department Nissen huts, one used as the church and one as the sacristy, were put up two years after the 1946 purchase of the site of Saint Alban's. Laying of the foundation stone for Saint Alban, Chaddesden, took place on 3 October 1953, with the building's opening dated 26 June 1955.

History

The parish of Saint Alban, Chaddesden, was formed from the parish of Saint Mary's, Derby. The church was considered too small after 30 years of parish growth. In September 2005 the altered church was reopened for worship. The original church was retained, with the sanctuary reoriented to the centre of the south wall of the neve.

Parish life

Confession is heard both by appointment and at the regular scheduled times. Children aged 7 and upwards come together for singing. Adults take part in an informal singing group.

The Anointing of the Sick is offered to a person who is ill. A Mass may be celebrated for a particular intention. Submitted prayer requests are taken up in prayer. Adoration is offered, and people can pray together at prayer times.
