About Saint Anne, Buxton
Saint Anne, Buxton is a Roman Catholic church in Buxton, Derbyshire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.
Introduction
The first resident priest was appointed in 1850, Father O'Farrell having been named from 1848, after visiting priests had said weekly Mass in Buxton from 1837.
History
Father Edward McGreevy, priest from 1850 to 1863, died on 22 June 1863. Priestly service by Father William Margison ran from 1863 to 1871. Priestly service by Father Michael O'Driscoll ran from 1871 to 1873. The year 1875 was when Father Joseph Reddington was priest.
Father John Power's time as priest lasted from 1875 to 1885. On 11 Aug 1900 Canon John Theodore Hoeben died, having been priest from 1885 to 1899. On 31 Mar 1927 Father Frederick Kind died, having been priest from 1900 to 1927. On 29 Sept 1937 Father Luke A Prendergast died, having been priest from 1928 to 1937.
Canon Arthur J Bird's time as priest lasted from 1937 to 1941. In 2019 the Parish Pastoral Council used grants to start a monthly Sunday Club for people aged 65 or over.
Architecture and furnishings
A right-hand-side stained glass window depicts Our Lady of Fatima appearing to Jacinta, Francesco and Lucy. The stained glass window bears a dedication to Polish Army Captain Janusz Zorawski, a man who fought in the Second World War. Fitting followed the stained glass window's return to London, prompted by a missing accent above the O in Janusz's name.
Music and liturgy
A candidate-led Confirmation programme includes a pre-Confirmation weekend at the Briars, with discussion, games, stories, film, music, poetry and practical activities.
Visiting
The Justice and Peace Group supports the Diocesan Justice and Peace Commission and works for peace through justice and compassion. A Parish Visiting Group was formed to visit parishioners who cannot come to church.
