About Saint Mary, Louth

Saint Mary, Louth is a Roman Catholic church in Louth, Lincolnshire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.

Introduction

Saint Mary, Louth, in the Diocese of Nottingham, was begun in the 1830s alongside the presbytery.

History

The monastery at Louth was demolished during the Danish presence and restored during the reign of King Edgar. In Norman times, a great Cistercian abbey was established at Louth and remained until the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry. The sanctuary was added a few years after the church was begun. The sacristy was added in the 1870s.

A reordering of the sanctuary in 1997 destroyed its high altar and reredos ensemble and several gothic-style shrines on the walls. Thomas Kendall, rector of the parish church of S. James, was given the Tyburn treatment in 1537.
