About Saint Ninian
Saint Ninian is a Roman Catholic church in Inverness, Highland. It is part of the Diocese of Aberdeen.
Introduction
Saint Ninian's in Inverness, within the Diocese of Aberdeen, was rebuilt in its present form in 1977.
History
Plans for the first Saint Ninian's were submitted in October 1959 and approved in November, with an estimated cost of £6000. The present Saint Ninian's was conceived and planned in 1976, at an estimated cost of £56,000. The remains of Hill Park form the foundations of the present-day Saint Ninian's Altar. In 2012, a new parish priest came from Saint Anne's, Thurso, following the previous priest's appointment as Vicar General and move to Aberdeen.
Architecture and furnishings
The present building incorporates the basement of the original church, which serves as a hall. The design of the new Saint Ninian's reflects the Second Vatican Council, with the tabernacle separate from the centrally situated altar. In the original design there was a Blessed Sacrament chapel behind the altar, later converted to a sacristy. The Nave and the East transept lie outside the boundaries of the old church, defined by the altar area and the West transept.
Music and liturgy
The newly formed choir practices every Wednesday in the presbytery. The choir gathers to learn more hymns and rehearse hymns for the following Sunday. Young adults meet on Saturday for practice.
Parish life
The church has a wheelchair platform lift to enable disabled people access, and disabled parking space. The Saint Vincent de Paul society welcomes new members for its apostolate of visiting the sick and looking after the elderly. The parish welcomes additional altar servers; anyone who has made their First Holy Communion is invited to speak to the priest or catechists.
Sacraments and pastoral care
The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul at Saint Ninian's visits distressed people in their homes and takes Holy Communion to the sick and infirm in care-homes, nursing homes, and the housebound.
