About Saint Patrick, Chislehurst

Saint Patrick, Chislehurst is a Roman Catholic church in Chislehurst, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Southwark.

Introduction

Saint Patrick's Church in Chislehurst was opened and dedicated on Saint Patrick's Day, 17 March 1961. Saint Patrick's Parish, Chislehurst West has been operating since 1961.

History

From November 1953, one mass a week was held for Chislehurst West in the British Legion Hall. By 1962 Chislehurst West became an independent parish and the neighbouring semi-detached house was bought for use as a presbytery. In 1966 a church hall was added. In 1990 the church roof gave rise for serious concern for the fourth time in the building's short history, having previously sustained severe damage three times during the Second World War.

Architecture and furnishings

Three relics are placed beneath the church's altar: St Lucian, St Grace (ancient Roman martyrs) and St Oliver Plunkett (Archbishop of Armagh, Ireland and martyr).

Visiting

Each year, 5th May is kept as a solemnity in Saint Patrick's. Visitors can park on-site with limited spaces to the front and a rear car park entered from Albany Road, while two large public car parks are close by. Five bus routes pass the door, with stops at St Patrick’s Church, Sainsbury’s, or Belmont Parade.
