About Saint Paul, Lenton

Saint Paul, Lenton is a Roman Catholic church in Lenton, Nottinghamshire. It is part of the Diocese of Nottingham.

Introduction

The Catholic mission in Nottingham's Radford district began in 1882 after a site was bought on Salisbury Street.

History

A school chapel opened in Salisbury Street in September 1897, followed by a convent of Franciscan Minoresses by 1898. The foundation stone of the purpose-built church on Lenton Boulevard was laid in July 1929 by Bishop Dunn. The new church officially opened on 25 January 1930.

The building

The coarse grey-brick church was built in a Gothic style and measured 85 feet by 26 feet. An Angelus bell made by Taylors of Loughborough hangs in the turret above the sacristy.

Notable features

The church acquired a pre-Reformation font from the former Cluniac priory at Lenton. Its pneumatic-action organ was made by Bower and Dunn of Sheffield with one manual and 380 pipes.
