About Saint Thomas' Church, Neilston

Saint Thomas' Church, Neilston is a Roman Catholic church in Neilston, East Renfrewshire. It is part of the Diocese of Paisley.

Introduction

Saint Thomas' Church in Neilston, within the Diocese of Paisley, was built in 1861, before the diocese was founded in 1947. Bishop Murdoch, Vicar Apostolic of the Western District, blessed, opened and dedicated the church to Saint Thomas the Apostle on 22 September 1861.

History

The first Catholic church in Neilston was built in 1163 and served as the centre of Catholic worship for almost 400 years. In 1559, that first church was attacked and desecrated during the Protestant Reformation, and the building and land passed to the Reformed Church. In April 1863, a resident priest was appointed and moved to Neilston in August 1863 to supervise the new presbytery, completed in 1864. In its first year, the school had an average of 75 pupils and a night school of 60 pupils; during the resident priest's seventeen years, an additional room was built. The parish hall was opened by a bishop on 14 March 2003.

Parish life

The Guild of the Rosary, the Guild of Saint Patrick, the Society of Christian Mothers and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul were quickly established. The parish is connected to St Thomas' Primary School in Neilston. Since 2016, the parish priest has also been the chaplain to St Luke's High School in Barrhead. Other groups meet regularly in the hall throughout the week.
