About St. Athanasius

St. Athanasius is a Roman Catholic church in Carluke, South Lanarkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Motherwell.

Introduction

The parish of Saint Athanasius in Carluke was formally established from a mission in Lanark in 1849, probably on the Feast of Saint Athanasius, 2nd May. Saint Athanasius is the 4th oldest parish in the Diocese of Motherwell, after Saint Margaret's Airdrie (1836), Saint Mary's Hamilton (1839), and Saint Patrick's Coatbridge (1842).

History

The first permanent church building was opened and blessed on Sunday, 13th September 1857 by Bishop Murdoch, with Father McCay appointed Priest-in-charge. Saint Athanasius became the mother-parish of many parishes on this side of Lanarkshire, including Newmains, Shotts and Biggar. The parish celebrated its 150th Anniversary in 1999. Due to an increase in parishioners, the Church interior was renovated and remodeled in 1957.
