About St. Bede, Carlisle

St. Bede, Carlisle is a Roman Catholic church in Carlisle, Cumbria. It is part of the Diocese of Lancaster.

Introduction

Eleven years of being served from Saint Marys and Saint Joseph’s passed before the Parish of Saint Bede was established. The new church of Saint Bede in Carlisle was constructed and consecrated in 1959.

History

A sharp increase in Carlisle’s Catholic population, among them Irish people who had fled the famine, lay behind the Wigton Road mission. In 1878 Carlisle was split into two missions, and Saint Bede’s was established to the west of the River Caldew. In the 1930s the church of Saint Bede was too small for the parish.
