St. Bernard, Shirehampton

Introduction

Bishop George Ambrose Burton, then bishop of Clifton, laid the foundation stone for Saint Bernard’s parish in September 1902. The building of Saint Bernard’s parish, completed in 1903, had seating for 65 people.

History

Catholics in Shirehampton walked every Sunday to the chapel of Saint Ursula’s Convent at Westbury-on-Trym before Mass began in Shirehampton in 1901. Most parishioners of Saint Bernard’s parish then were Irish; many worked at Avonmouth Dock.

Music and liturgy

Volunteer members regularly visit people at home, in hospital and in care homes, give practical help such as food, furniture or financial help, and organise trips and events for older and isolated people.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Bernard parishes are registered buildings for weddings. Marriage at Our Lady of the Rosary or Saint Bernard's requires a family link with the respective parish. Marriages are not celebrated on a Sunday or during Lent or Advent.

Children preparing for First Holy Communion are expected to attend all preparatory sessions and Sunday Masses, and to attend weekend Mass regularly with their family. Women of the parishes may join an association that exists to empower its members spiritually, strengthen their faith, and evangelize families and society.
