About St. Columba
St. Columba is a Roman Catholic church in Bradford, West Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Leeds.
Introduction
In 2006, the Bishop of Leeds instigated a re-organisation of the Bradford Deanery, leading to the closure of some Catholic churches and the amalgamation of parishes, including Saint Peter's Laisterdyke and Saint Columba's Tong Street.
Architecture and furnishings
Construction of the church began in 1958, and it was formally opened on 3 October 1959. Peter Langtry-Langton reordered the church around 1990. A bronze statue of Jesus Christ on the cross stands at the front of the church, positioned against plain glass arched windows above the entrance. The parish offers Children's Liturgy, an age-appropriate Liturgy of the Word for children.
Parish life
The parish incorporates Saint Peter's Church, Laisterdyke and Saint Columba's Church, Tong Street. The parish hosts a Society of Saint Vincent de Paul group committed to combatting poverty and tackling isolation in local communities. Both churches in the parish have a piety stall selling religious goods such as cards, statues, rosaries, crucifixes, crosses, and baptism and confirmation gifts. The parish participates in the Bradford Faith Trail, committed to deepening understanding and mutual respect between people of differing faiths. Sacramental preparation is usually organised by the parish with the support of the local Catholic primary school.
