About St Edmund of Canterbury

St Edmund of Canterbury is a Roman Catholic church in Whitton, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.

Introduction

The parish of St Edmund of Canterbury in Whitton, within the Archdiocese of Westminster, was founded in 1934 by the Edmundite Fathers (Society of St Edmund).

History

In 1934 the Edmundite order acquired property in Whitton known as 'The Retreat', and Fr Cheray and others converted existing structures into a chapel. The Retreat witnessed its first Mass on 24th September 1934 offered by Fr Cheray. A German oil bomb destroyed the new church on 29th October 1940. The new church opened in 1963 and was consecrated in 1972. In 1988 the Edmundite Fathers left Whitton, returning to America, and since then the parish has been in the care of Westminster Diocese.

Music and liturgy

Incense is used at all Sunday Masses and Holy Days. The church holds a St Edmund's Novena on the 16th day of every month. The parish has choirs and folk groups that sing at Sunday Masses and other occasions and liturgies.

Parish life

The parish runs a parents and baby and toddler group. The parish offers a preparation course for Confirmation for young people aged 14 and above. The parish offers a gentle program for non-Catholic adults who would like to know more about Catholicism, with the possibility of joining the Catholic Church.

The parish arranges visits to bring Holy Communion regularly to those unable to get to church due to health or personal reasons. Each week, the parish newsletter The Chronicle lists Mass intentions, and the same intentions are displayed on the church's front door.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The parish offers a preparation class for baptism for young people aged 7 to 17 who are not yet baptised. The parish offers a program for adults aged 18 and above converting to the Catholic faith or who have not yet received one of the Sacraments.

The parish offers the Sacrament of Anointing and Healing for those facing long-term illness or preparing for a hospital operation, with a priest visiting to anoint. The parish offers confidential support for marriage, with a priest available to speak with.
