About St Edward, Lees

St Edward, Lees is a Roman Catholic church in Lees, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Diocese of Salford.

Introduction

The original church was built as a chapel of ease for Saint Mary's parish in Oldham, housing both school and chapel, with first Mass celebrated towards the end of 1872.

History

In 1875 St Edward, Lees, changed from a chapel of ease to a separate mission with its first rector, Father John Ryan, and the presbytery was added in January 1884. Father Michael J Ryan, who arrived in 1898, oversaw the building of the new school and chapel in Spring Lane, where the first Mass was celebrated in May 1900. The lower floor of the church building began a new life as the Parish Hall after the school moved to Rowland Way in 1981. The Saint John Street building continued in use until May 1900, then became a Men's Club, briefly a School for Physical Culture, was leased to the Air Raid Protection service for 5 years from 1939, and was sold into private ownership in 1947. The chapel of ease at Holts, dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, was opened on 25th February 1964 and served until 1991; it was built as a forward planning measure for a larger congregation than was ever realised and was frequently vandalised.

Parish life

The Young Christian Workers group, open to parishioners aged 13-30, is led by the National Chaplain for the organisation. A playgroup runs every Thursday during term time for babies to pre-schoolers. Refreshments are served in the Parish Hall after Saturday and Sunday masses.

Regular events

The parish has taken part in the Civic Service of Remembrance in Lees Cemetery every year since 1965, a tradition that continues today. The parish participates in every Lent and Harvest Fast Day Appeal and in the annual CAFOD campaign action.
