About St. Elphege, Wallington
St. Elphege, Wallington is a Roman Catholic church in Wallington, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Southwark.
Introduction
A new school was built in 1969 in Mollison Drive. A school was opened in 1928 in Castlemead, a large house next to the church.
History
In 1908, fewer than a hundred parishioners lived in Wallington, and Miss Florence Ellis funded the building of the first church, now the Parish Centre. In January 2020, the parish priest retired and a new priest was welcomed.
Entry and exit foyers are part of the church. The school was moved to Ross Road but closed in 1954. Castlemead became the parish centre. Four parishioners have been ordained as secular priests serving in the diocese.
Music and liturgy
The Youth Choir is listed in the parish newsletter. Different languages have been used in the bidding prayers at special Masses. Bidding Prayers is an opportunity for children and young people to lead the congregation in prayer. The Sacristan Team prepares the church for Mass and other liturgical events.
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is offered for those who wish to become Catholic or complete their sacraments. The Catechist Team passes on the Catholic faith to children, young people, and adults preparing for the Sacraments.
Parish life
The parish became a remarkably diverse congregation with parishioners from all over the world. Parishioners have taken part in ecumenical activities such as the yearly prayer week for Christian unity and the Good Friday walk. The parish has been in the forefront of the Sutton Deanery's welcome of a Syrian family in response to the Pope's call. The parish has dedicated Eucharistic Ministers who visit the sick and homebound parishioners every Friday or as arranged.
Eucharistic Ministers assist the priests every Friday to take Holy Communion to the sick at home. The parish has three priests and a deacon from the parish. Couples are encouraged to attend the one-day Marriage Preparation organised by the Archdiocese.
The parish holds monthly birthday celebrations, each month with its own unique style of celebration. The parish Facebook page broadcasts Masses live and shares news and events.
