About St Etheldreda

St Etheldreda is a Roman Catholic church in Ely, Cambridgeshire. It is part of the Diocese of East Anglia.

Introduction

In 1950 a small part of Saint Etheldreda’s hand returned to the parish from Saint Etheldreda’s Church, Ely Place, London. In June 1953 the Dominican sisters at Stone donated the main relic of Saint Etheldreda to the parish.

Visiting

The parish began as a distinct mission in 1890 when Fr John Francis Freeland opened the first place of worship by partitioning his lodging room, and in 1892 opened a small corrugated iron chapel on the site where the later church would be.
