About St. Felix

St. Felix is a Roman Catholic church in Felixstowe, Suffolk. It is part of the Diocese of East Anglia.

Introduction

Saint Felix Church in Felixstowe, in the Diocese of East Anglia, was officially opened on 31st July 1912.

History

The first resident Catholic priest, Father William Cooper, was appointed in June 1899. The foundation stone of the new building was laid in February 1911. The church was completed in 1958 by the addition of the baptistry and porch.

Architecture and furnishings

A statue depicting Saint Felix surmounts the inscription. The church contains a collection of stained glass by the well-known firm of Hardman, and also modern glass by the artist Tom Denny.

Music and liturgy

A rota of Ministers of the Word read at Mass on weekends and other Holydays, and on a volunteer basis at weekday services. Altar Servers assist the priest at Mass and other liturgies, and both boys and girls who have made their First Holy Communion are able to become servers.

Parish life

A parish team provides a monthly service at an old people's home. The parish runs a series of talks and discussions for those considering becoming Catholic, also open to Catholics who wish to deepen their understanding. A group of welcomers greets people at weekend Masses, distributes and collects books, takes up collections, and offers help and information. The parish's Finance Committee advises the parish priest on priorities and ensures sound economic management. There are no Catholic schools in the Felixstowe area, but the Ipswich area offers a complete 4-19 Catholic education in the maintained sector.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Ministers assist with the distribution of communion at Mass and bring communion to the sick and housebound in their homes and in hospital. Baptism is by arrangement with the Parish Priest; Confirmation preparation usually takes place every 2 years; Marriage is by arrangement with the Parish Priest.

Visiting

Religious goods such as cards, missals and rosaries are available for purchase in the church porch at all weekend masses. A number of parishioners are willing to meet with newcomers for an informal welcome visit and to introduce them to parish life.
