About St Francis of Assisi

St Francis of Assisi is a Roman Catholic church in Bedworth, Warwickshire. It is part of the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

Introduction

St Francis of Assisi Church in Bedworth, within the Archdiocese of Birmingham, was opened in June 1883. Before the church was built, the Catholic community gathered in a disused shop and then a small chapel.

History

In 1889 the Franciscan Fathers left Nuneaton and gave up the Bedworth mission. In 1894 a school was built close to the church, big enough for some 150 pupils aged 4 to 14. The church was extended into its present form and consecrated on 4 September 1923. The church is enhanced by a Calvary and a grotto in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Architecture and furnishings

The original church was a modest oblong structure in traditional Victorian redbrick with a small schoolroom along the west side. The sanctuary is at the west end, opposite to the original. The Piety Stall in both parishes offers cards, calendars, books, Missals and similar items after weekend Masses.

Sacraments and pastoral care

The RCIA programme at St Francis Church is for anyone expressing an interest in converting to the Catholic faith. The Bulkington Visiting Group visits people in the parish who may be lonely, housebound, ill or in need of someone to talk to. Families may have the Reception of the body into the church the night before the funeral, followed by a Requiem Mass and Committal.
