About St. John the Evangelist, Bromley Cross
St. John the Evangelist, Bromley Cross is a Roman Catholic church in Bromley Cross, Greater Manchester. It is part of the Diocese of Salford.
Introduction
Saint John the Evangelist in Bromley Cross, within the Diocese of Salford, was founded in 1960, incorporating St Aldhelm's Turton which had existed since 1890. The current church was opened in 1967.
History
The first Mass in the converted Ministry of Pensions building was celebrated on 26 August 1961. The temporary building was used as a parish hall until the primary school was built in 1977. The benches are arranged around three sides of the sanctuary so everyone is close to the altar. The SVP at St John's was established on 1 March 1965.
Architecture and furnishings
The church has an etched window giving the history of the parish from 1890. The church has modern stained glass windows designed by Charles Norris, a monk from Buckfast Abbey.
Parish life
The parish school is St John the Evangelist RC Primary School. In February 2010, the CAFOD groups of St Brendan's and St John's were amalgamated to form a joint group.
St John's has a long tradition of both guitar and organ led music, played on a rota basis covering both weekend Masses. The parish runs a Baptism Preparation Course for parents who wish to have their child baptised.
