About St. John's Cathedral

St. John's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in Portsmouth, Hampshire. It is part of the Diocese of Portsmouth.

Introduction

Saint John's Cathedral in Portsmouth was built in 1882 to provide for the increasing number of Catholics in the city.

History

The crossing with transepts dates from 1886, and the chancel with apse, north and south chapels, and south porch from 1893. The west portal and two bell turrets were added in 1906. After bomb damage, the cathedral was restored between 1945 and 1950 and re-ordered in 1971.

Architecture and furnishings

The tracery was restored from 1945 to 1950, except for the south transept window. The north aisle contains an apsidal chapel from 1925 and a new baptistry. J Crawley built the cathedral between 1877 and 1881, with extensions by J Hansom from 1881 to 1896 and by Canon Alexander Scoles in 1906. The building uses red brick in Flemish bond with Portland stone dressings and a plain tile roof. The architectural style is Decorated. Inside, pointed arched arcades have clustered columns and leafy capitals, and wooden ceilings are vaulted with moulded ribs. Fittings include a marble altar and reredos in the Lady Chapel, tessellated chapel floors, and free-standing stations of the cross.

Parish life

The parish hosts a monthly First Saturday devotion of Reparation as requested by Our Lady of Fatima. The parish has a Catholic Mothers group for prayer, discussion, and fellowship. The parish has a team of altar servers, many of whom are members of the Archconfraternity of St Stephen. The parish has a Flower Team that arranges altar flowers in accordance with the Church Liturgy and special feast days. The parish has readers who proclaim God's Word during Sunday Masses, with training provided.
