About St Joseph and St Nicholas, Moorends
St Joseph and St Nicholas, Moorends is a Roman Catholic church in Moorends, South Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Hallam.
Introduction
By 1912 a corrugated iron church was erected and opened on 30th June 1912. The Bishop of Leeds laid the foundation stone on September 5th, 1938.
History
Father Dolan began work on the church in 1938, and it was opened by the Bishop of Leeds in 1939. After a fire, the old Empire Cinema was acquired for the parish and became Saint Joseph's Hall. Father Dolan died in 1944 and was the first priest from the parish buried in the cemetery at Thorne. The first baptism, on 28th June 1908, was recorded by Father Ryan himself.
Architecture and furnishings
The five stained glass windows in the baptistry were installed during a priest's time, the work of Miss Elfa Courtoit, born in Antwerp, Belgium, who donated them. The stained glass windows depict the rock of Moses, Noah's Ark, Christ dying on the Cross, the Passage through the Red Sea and the Baptism of Christ.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Harriet and Ryan Moore were welcomed into the Catholic community through Baptism. Aleksander Thomas Griffin was welcomed into the Catholic community through Baptism.
