About St Joseph, Handsworth

St Joseph, Handsworth is a Roman Catholic church in Handsworth, South Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Hallam.

Introduction

The foundation stone was laid on Wednesday 17 August 1879 by Bishop Cornthwaite, the Bishop of Leeds.

History

The first Mass in the area was celebrated in 1867, and from 1870 it was served from a Mission House near Woodhouse Hall on Stubbin Lane. Father Kay took over as parish priest upon the death of van Roosmalen in 1924.

Music and liturgy

For funerals, the priest may arrange for an organist to play suitable sacred music. Only sacred music is permitted in church, and recorded music is never allowed at funerals.

Sacraments and pastoral care

Couples must make an appointment with the Director of Music to discuss wedding music. Baptism dates are normally agreed after completion of the preparatory programme. A child may be baptised during one of the Sunday Masses in the presence of the parish community. The Church provides a candle as a sign of the resurrection of Jesus.

A white shawl is used as part of the baptism ceremonies if the family has one. Arrangements for baptism may be made before the child is born, and the priest can give a blessing for an expectant mother. A non-Catholic who is a baptised Christian may stand as a Christian witness alongside a Catholic godparent.
