About St. Joseph

St. Joseph is a Roman Catholic church in Moorthorpe, West Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Leeds.

Introduction

St Joseph's Church in Moorthorpe, in the Diocese of Leeds, was opened on October 22nd, 1928. The church served the communities of South Kirkby, South Elmsall and Upton.

History

St Joseph's began with a school opened in 1912. The first parish priest was Father Thomas McNiff, a former curate at Hemsworth, who served until his death in 1950. In 1993 structural problems were found, but members raised finance for repairs.

Parish life

St Joseph's School had 83 applicants for 30 reception places, with 24 baptised Catholics, and 10 of 30 Year 6 pupils going to St Wilfrid's. The Open Heart Memory Café went out for lunch to Burntwood Court Hotel and invited the Senior group to join them. Confirmation preparation employs Family Catechesis with meetings in the parish hall, and Confirmations are likely early in the New Year.
