About St Jude & St John Ogilvie

St Jude & St John Ogilvie is a Roman Catholic church in Barlanark, Glasgow City. It is part of the Archdiocese of Glasgow.

Introduction

The church was opened in 1956. The Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur came to live in Barlanark and became a presence in the Parish of St Jude’s in March 1982.

Architecture and furnishings

The stained glass window of St John Ogilvie was originally installed in St John Ogilvie Church, Easterhouse to mark John Ogilvie’s canonisation in 1976. The window was transferred to St Jude’s in 2008 on the amalgamation of the 2 parishes.

The church contains a statue of St Jude depicting him holding a large club and an image of Christ at his breast. Saint Jude’s Music Ministry exists as ministers of music to praise God, grow in faith, and enjoy Christian fellowship.

Parish life

From the start of parish records until May 2006, just over 2200 baptisms have been celebrated in the parish font. Up to May 2006 around 2500 people have received Holy Communion for the first time in the parish. As of May 2006, over 2500 people have been Confirmed in the parish.

St Jude's was one of the first parishes to get involved in the Archdiocesan Pastoral 'Renew' Plan, setting up liturgical and non-liturgical groups including Scottish Country Dancing for young people. A Prayer group and Justice and Peace group met regularly in the Sisters' flat, and directed retreats in daily life were arranged for members. The candidates and the Elect are initiated through the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday.
