About St Mary and St Andrew's
St Mary and St Andrew's is a Roman Catholic church in Dollis Hill, Greater London. It is part of the Archdiocese of Westminster.
Introduction
Francis Bradford, K.S.G., designed, built and contracted the church. Bishop Butt solemnly opened the new church on May 18th 1933.
Architecture and furnishings
The present church structure, including the hall beneath, was completed at a cost of slightly less than £10,000. The building survived heavy bombing in the war. In 1999 work commenced on providing access to the church for all people, by means of a ramp and lift, completed in November 1999.
Music and liturgy
Eucharistic Ministers assist the priests in distributing Holy Communion at Sunday and weekday Masses and bring Communion to the sick. Readers read the Word of God at Sunday and weekday Masses. Young people from Year 3 upwards may train to serve at Mass. Sacristans care for the vessels and vestments, prepare the church for Mass, and care for the church and its furnishings.
Parish life
The parish's St Luke's Hospice Group raises funds for St Luke's Hospice, Kenton, and in 2003 one event raised over £5000. Infant Baptism Catechists prepare parents for the Baptism of their children through catechetical sessions held bi-monthly on two consecutive Saturdays. First Holy Communion Catechists prepare those, mostly children, to receive Holy Communion for the first time, with regular meetings and new catechists teamed with experienced ones. Confirmation Catechists prepare young people, usually in Year 9, for the Sacrament of Confirmation, meeting regularly within a prepared programme. RCIA Catechists prepare and initiate those wishing to become full members of the Catholic Church, accompanying Catechumens through prayer and parish life.
Sacraments and pastoral care
The parish requires a minimum of six months notice to the church for marriage. The parish does not offer a pre-marriage course, but couples may complete one online at SmartLoving Engaged, approved by the Diocese of Westminster. Parents who live within the parish should be registered for at least six months and should be participants in the faith community and known to the priests.
