About St. Mary

St. Mary is a Roman Catholic church in Barnard Castle, Durham. It is part of the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle.

Introduction

The parish of St Mary's extends over the whole of Upper Teesdale, including Middleton-in-Teesdale where a small chapel-of-ease serves local people.

History

The modern parish of St Mary's dates to 1845 when its first parish priest, Father William Allen, was appointed; he bought the Union Hall and transformed it into a parish church. The new church of St Mary's was opened in 1928, replacing the old church which was sold and demolished for housing. The Dales Catholic Parish was formed on 1 January 2024 by the amalgamation of four Catholic churches.
