About St. Mary
St. Mary is a Roman Catholic church in Halifax, West Yorkshire. It is part of the Diocese of Leeds.
Introduction
Saint Mary's Church in Halifax, within the Diocese of Leeds, was founded in 1834 when its first parish priest laid the foundation stone.
History
During most of the eighteenth century, Mass was celebrated in Halifax in various rooms and meeting houses. The church was built on land obtained opposite the old place of executions on Gibbet Lane. In 1861, a great section of the church collapsed during a stormy night but was soon rebuilt. Schools were added to the complex of buildings in 1846.
The church was consecrated in its centenary year of 1934 by Bishop Cowgill of Leeds. In 1954, Saint Alban's Church in Huddersfield Road was opened, and a first parish priest was installed two years later. In 1934 St Columba's Church was built and set up as a separate parish in the Pellon District of Halifax. The choir enhances the religious services at Christmas and Easter.
Music and liturgy
The choir sings a variety of Mass settings, motets and religious songs in styles from plainsong to modern settings. The choir sings in unison, two-part and four-part S.A.T.B.
Sacraments and pastoral care
Adults interested in becoming Catholic undergo a period of instruction, often in group meetings, before reception. A parent must speak to the Parish Priest at least three weeks before a baby's baptism to make an appointment. Attendance at a Pre-Marriage Course is seriously expected, with a course held in the Halifax Deanery each spring.
