St. Mary of the Angels, Bolton-le-Sands

Introduction

The church is built of snecked sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings and a slate roof.

Architecture and furnishings

The church has a tall nave and chancel with a continuous ridge line, and low lean-to aisles. The church has a porch under a slim south-west tower, which is broached to a louvred octagon with a pyramidal roof. Inside is a 5-bay arcade with marble columns and heavy sculptural detail. The chancel arch has ringed shafts on heavily carved corbels.

The church has a short 2-bay chancel with a tall stone reredos and stencilled wall decoration. There is a timber gallery on marble columns at the west end. The nave has an open timber roof with high collars, king posts and arcaded ashlaring. The church contains some stained glass of late C19th date.
