About St. Mary's Church, Bathgate
St. Mary's Church, Bathgate is a Roman Catholic church in Bathgate, West Lothian. It is part of the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh.
Introduction
Saint Mary's Church in Bathgate traces its origins to an old church in Livery Street purchased in 1855 by Daniel Collins, an Irish contractor.
History
The old church was converted to seat about 600 and reopened in 1858 when Bathgate became a parish. In 1888, after renovations by Father O'Carroll, the church was opened as the Church of the Immaculate Conception. The old church was demolished in the early twentieth century to make way for a new one on the same site. The foundation stone for the new church was laid on 21 May 1907 by Archbishop James Andrew Smith. The new church was opened on 29 October 1908 by the Archbishop, with seating for 800. Father Charles Murdoch, parish priest from 1913 to 1919, was responsible for the erection of the Sacred Heart Altar.
Architecture and furnishings
The sanctuary is lined with Italian and Greek marble and features a mosaic of Our Lord with a gold background. The sanctuary floor is made from Sicilian marble, and the design is copied from a Greek church in Rome. A granite Celtic cross was erected in front of the church in 1920 in memory of 61 lives lost in the First World War. In 1954, the Marian Year, alterations were made to the previous winter chapel and it was adapted into the Chapel of Our Lady, completed in early 1955.
Parish life
From the Bathgate Mission, the parish served many surrounding districts, typically on a once or twice a month basis. A church building fund was established by the parish, initiated by Father Joseph Hannon, who arrived in 1893.
